Harry Potter Thursdays #14

“Wow. We’re Identical.”

— Fred and George Weasley, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows

In honour of April 1 being the Weasley Twins’ birthday, I am dedicating this month of Harry Potter quotes to Fred and George. There are so many that I love that I won’t be able to include them all, but we’ll get a few anyways. This first one doesn’t seem like much, but I feel like it goes far to sum up Fred and George’s humour, even in tense situations.

If you’re not sure, this quote is from The Deathly Hallows movie (first one) when everyone takes the Polyjuice Potion to turn into Harry. And the resident twins try to lighten the mood. By pointing out how they are now identical. The entire scene is full of great lines and moments (I mean how can it not be when you have Daniel Radcliffe pretending to be so many people), but I think that is my favourite line.

Don’t forget, a little humour can go a long way.

Doctor Who Wednesdays #9

Doctor: “All of creation has just been wiped from the sky. Do you know how many lives now never happened? All the people who never lived. Your girlfriend isn’t more important than the whole universe.”
Rory: “She is to me!” {Rory then proceeds to punch The Doctor in the face}

— 11th Doctor and Rory Williams, The Big Bang

To be clear, the Doctor was trying to get a rise out of Rory here. A whole bunch of really complicated stuff happened and the Doctor needed to make sure that Rory really was Rory. He knew that to the real Rory, Amy was the most important person in the world. It doesn’t mean that nobody else was important, and that the other lives lost didn’t matter. But to Rory, none of that would really have mattered if Amy wasn’t safe.

Remember a couple weeks ago when the bad guy was defeated by a Cyberman who loved? Well, this was a similar kind of situation. Rory was never turned into a Cyberman, but he was a mechanical robot, death weapon guy. He wasn’t able to control all of his actions because of that. But, his love for Amy meant that he stayed active after all of the other mechanical robot, death weapon guys were deactivated.

Something About Sundays #10

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, The Arrow and the Song

Musical Saturdays #9

“Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then some body bends

Just a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the beast

Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
Ever just as sure
As the sun will rise

Tale as old as time
Tune as old as song
Bitter sweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast”

— Howard Ashman, Beauty and the Beast

I couldn’t decide which snippet of lyrics to include from this song, so I included all of it. I have always been a Disney Girl, and Beauty and the Beast has always been my favourite.

Doctor Who Wednesdays #8

“You know when, sometimes you meet someone beautiful, and then you actually talk to them and five minutes later, they’re dull as a brick? Then there’s other people, and you meet them and you think, ‘Not bad; they’re okay.’ And then you get to know them, and their face sort of becomes them, like their personality is written all over it. And they just turn into something so beautiful. Rory’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever met.”

— Amy Pond, The Girl Who Waited

I just love this quote. I love how it focuses on the personality, the whole person. It doesn’t negate how first impressions work, and our tendency as humans to make initial judgments based on appearance. But it goes deeper. It goes to the way that a person’s appearance can seemingly change the more you get to know them. It’s the idea of beauty being in they eye of the beholder. Sure, some people might seem to be beautiful to everyone. But that’s only surface beauty. And true beauty goes much deeper than that. True beauty requires an understanding of more than the what our eyes can see.

Musical Saturdays #7

“Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn’t you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name,
and they’re always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.”
