History Friday’s #10 – A Tribute to Leonard Nimoy

In light of the sad news heard today regarding the death of Leonard Nimoy, I have decided to modify today’s quote and divert from the theme of history. I have also included two quotes today (one new and one old) as they are both Spock quotes that relate to friendship.

“Because you needed each other. I could not deprive you of the revelation of all that you could accomplish together, of a friendship that will define you both in ways you cannot yet realize.”

— Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Star Trek (2009)

“I have been, and always shall be, your friend. [places a Vulcan salute on the glass] Live long and prosper.”

— Leonard Nimoy as Spock, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Doctor Who Wednesdays #9

Doctor: “All of creation has just been wiped from the sky. Do you know how many lives now never happened? All the people who never lived. Your girlfriend isn’t more important than the whole universe.”
Rory: “She is to me!” {Rory then proceeds to punch The Doctor in the face}

— 11th Doctor and Rory Williams, The Big Bang

To be clear, the Doctor was trying to get a rise out of Rory here. A whole bunch of really complicated stuff happened and the Doctor needed to make sure that Rory really was Rory. He knew that to the real Rory, Amy was the most important person in the world. It doesn’t mean that nobody else was important, and that the other lives lost didn’t matter. But to Rory, none of that would really have mattered if Amy wasn’t safe.

Remember a couple weeks ago when the bad guy was defeated by a Cyberman who loved? Well, this was a similar kind of situation. Rory was never turned into a Cyberman, but he was a mechanical robot, death weapon guy. He wasn’t able to control all of his actions because of that. But, his love for Amy meant that he stayed active after all of the other mechanical robot, death weapon guys were deactivated.

Book it Tuesdays #9

“But it does not seem that I can trust anyone,’ said Frodo.
Sam looked at him unhappily. ‘It all depends on what you want,’ put in Merry. ‘You can trust us to stick with you through thick and thin–to the bitter end. And you can trust us to keep any secret of yours–closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word. We are your friends, Frodo.”

— J.R.R Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Something About Sundays #10

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

— Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, The Arrow and the Song

Musical Saturdays #9

“Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then some body bends
Unexpectedly

Just a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the beast

Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
Ever just as sure
As the sun will rise

Tale as old as time
Tune as old as song
Bitter sweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast”

— Howard Ashman, Beauty and the Beast

I couldn’t decide which snippet of lyrics to include from this song, so I included all of it. I have always been a Disney Girl, and Beauty and the Beast has always been my favourite.

History Fridays # 9

“That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.”

— Aldous Huxley

Okay – so I know that this is not at all in keeping with this months theme. But so far the History Friday’s have been the hardest segment and it was that much harder trying to get the quotes to fit the theme of Love and Friendship. So I have branched out so that I could get back to the main theme for Friday’s which is History and thinking about history.

Keep Smiling!
